1. We should be more ambitious with the software we build —

“Agreed. I’ve been seeing too much “I’ve been coding for decades and what I’ve always done has be reduced to telling AI to do it for me.” and not nearly enough “I’ve been coding for decades and recently worked hard for months with AI’s help to make something I would have never considered possible before.” Much easier to complain that you are bored than to step back up to high-effort with your new fancy tools.”

2. I refuse to accept a censored Internet. Join Me at FOSDEM 27 —

“Is there an uncensored intetnet, because i dont think there is. if there is any, it can be turned off because its being routed on the censored net wrapped in encryption. that being said, that makes me pretty interested in this talk. outside of hacking sattelites and such things and/or infra i really dont see any opportunities to break free of the will of corporations as they can simply pay infra providers to do their bidding. I dont think software can solve all problems because internet exists essentially as informaiton transported over infrastructure. the software surely helps enable that but its a helper not the actual network. happy to learn otherwise from anyone here ofc :-)” — saidnooneever [c:50234225] (译文:存在一个没有被审查的互联网吗?

"”Censorship” vs “Content moderation”. You can’t have online discussions without moderation, and that makes moderation some form of censorship. Thus you can’t have online discussions without some form of censorship. Only difference is who is doing the censoring.”

“The only subreddit I’ve ever been banned from in 20+ years is /r/comics. Lifetime ban for a single offence of questioning a comic strip. According to the mod: “This is a fan subreddit, this is not a discussion subreddit.” There’s plenty of discussion on there, but I now realize it’s highly filtered. It took me too long to figure that out because it mostly aligned with my views up to that point. We’re in bubbles everywhere now. Enforced by mods and payment processors and social networks. I’m now much more careful about what I post online. We don’t have an actual public square to discuss things.”

3. A 10-year-old CNN outperforms frontier LLMs for skin cancer diagnosis —

“This is an example of why I’m a little stumped about why people are excited about Jev-style decision models. For any application at scale it’d be way more accurate to have a dedicated classifier using the right architecture (neural net, bayesian, etc.) LLMs drive the cost of making those models down to near zero. Just use the LLM to make a thing that’s actually good at what you need it to do.”

“I’m sorry but as an MLE this is not a remotely useful article, and does not belong on the front page. It’s comparing a fine-tuned CNN to general purpose models on a tiny dataset.”

“And a calculator outperforms LLMs at multiplication and division…”

4. Meta Ignores Brazilian Court Order to End Bolsonaro Favoritism —

“The Supreme Federal Court in Brazil has been notorious for censorship. The New York Times has found that it has ordered 223 account-blocking orders since 2020.”

“Meta, along with every other large platform, had previously banned the sitting president of the United States.”

5. Oregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One Cop —

“Freedom of Information Act in the UK means I make a request, and I get the information I asked for within 30 days. No excuses, no nonsense “fees”. Just what in the hell is happening in the USA?”

“Some agencies have a different tactic: go really slowly. I sent a public records request to my local school district on March 9th 2026. They responded on 19th March 2026 saying they’d respond on in late April. Since then, every month they’ve sent an email with some small portion of the records, with a PDF letter saying they’ll send a follow up a month later. I’ve received 8 of those responses so far, and there’s no indication when, if ever, I will have received all the records responsive to my request.”

“This is quite sad. Even if students would cheat off each other, someone had to do the homework. And even the collaboration of cheating on homework always served as a forcing function for me or others to think about the material. If not actively, at least in the form of a quasi background radiation. With AI that is completely gone, and without reward loops for incremental work, the truth is there is a large number of people (especially 18-20 year olds) who will not do well on the exams because they need a bit of a stick. I am not saying this as a black and white statement. I just think there are different cohorts of students based on maturity and self motivation and we might be losing out on one cohort that is at neither extreme.”

“In-class exams, either written or oral. If you don’t do homework, it is only on you. And with paper and pen, the next semester, yes.”

“No one has any money and entertainment is the first thing you cut. Every streaming service feels more and more user hostile. If I want to watch South Park it’s a 15$ a month subscription just for that . Paramount Plus has nothing else. I want to watch Lanterns, another 30$ a month. Maybe King of The Hill , 20$ a month. The Reboot has this weird lazy animation style.”

“Before AI showed up the UN released a report on the Attention Economy. It said Supply of content had vastly outstripped Demand. It decoupled because entertainment/media was being used to push other products. The telcos, amazon, google/fb and many others were all subsidizing content to push some other product. Exploding info chasing finite non growing eyeballs and time.”

“Have you seen media, arts and film that America produces recently? It’s garbage.”

Nikon Small World in Motion

“Why everything has to be touched by AI? I really don’t get it. Not long ago a canadian writer was also in the center of a storm accused of using AI in a novel that won a prize. Why do people fall for it so easily? Is it just laziness? Rush to finish things? We are so much better at creating new things that using the tech feels like cheating to ourselves.”

“Photography in general is in a weird place right now. AI-assisted autofocus, subject tracking, zoom/upscaling, exposure, white balance, noise reduction, color correction, HDR and lots more that all cameras have now is considered fine. Heavy AI-assisted editing in tools like Lightroom is considered fine. But the second an LLM gets involved for even the tiniest detail suddenly everyone is in agreement that “this is AI!!””

“As a technical writer, I believe default AI responses are optimized for what people think is good writing rather than what actually is good writing. My guess is years of RLHF optimized for rater’s first impressions of how well-written something was. It uses lists! It has headings! It uses fun phrases like ‘smoking gun’! It’s long and informative! These things are relatively fast and easy to identify and select as a preference. But none of this really covers whether the response is useful for the audience. If you’re not the audience, it can be hard to tell what is and isn’t useful.”

other 122.688 58.854 10-26
ai 84.140 26.606 10-26
security 80.548 18.096 10-24(20.274)
languages 79.617 23.831 10-25(25.975)
devtools 63.980 24.064 10-26
policy 53.860 21.291 10-26
culture 42.969 13.689 10-26

“Well, whoever picked the name HTTP2Shell certainly didn’t use any intelligence, artificial or genuine. It’s so meaningless, broad and undescriptive of the actual issue. No it probably doesn’t affect an HTTP server with nothing else behind it, so why is HTTP being blasted? You might as well call it Exploit Pro Max…”

“I can’t see a reason to use this and not C++ It reads like slop text” — iacuobos [c:50224589] (译文:我看不出有什么理由要用这个而不用 C++,读起来像一坨垃圾文本。)

I refuse to accept a censored Internet(FOSDEM 27) 1.987 → 3.398 +1.411
A 10-year-old CNN outperforms frontier LLMs 2.068 → 3.214 +1.146
Nikon photography contest winner loses title 2.027 → 2.631 +0.604

”> [others] Output tokens: ~5x more expensive than input tokens. > [them] Output tokens: FREE (too cheap to meter). I’m very confused by this.”
